ScoutPalSE Demo

To start ScoutPalSE on your phone, use the MENU button to go to Java Apps, then select and run ScoutPalSE.

The following are screen shots of ScoutPalSE in action.  They show how simple, easy and powerful bookscouting with ScoutPalSE will be!

To login, begin typing your ScoutPal ID.  Here you see that the user has typed the last character of the ID, which is "g", and is entered by pressing the "4" button on the phone keypad

Next, press the navigation button to scroll down and enter your ScoutPal password.

After entering your password, press the LOGIN button.  You may optionally scroll down and select the scanner and/or the server to be used before you LOGIN.

Make your scanner or server selection by highlighting it and pressing the green CALL button.  After you make your selections, press the LOGIN button.

Your ScoutPal ID and password, as well as the scanner and server connection choices you just made will automatically be remembered for you.  So the next time you run ScoutPalSE, all you will have to do is press the LOGIN button and begin using it.

Once logged in, you will be presented with a Scan List screen.  Just point the scanner at the barcode, and press "SCAN".  The laser beam will shoot out of the bottom of the phone...

... and nearly instantly scan the barcode and place it in the Scan List.  You can keep scanning like this, adding up to 32 barcodes to the Scan List before you press FETCH.

After you press FETCH, the barcode(s) will be sent to the ScoutPal server to be looked up in the Amazon database.  As the results stream in, you are given a visual indication of the progress.  Here, the progress display shows [||||||||       ] which means it is about halfway done retrieving the results over the cellular network.  If you have received enough data to make an informed purchase decision, even while the results are streaming in, simply press the STOP button.

Once the results are in, you can scroll through them.  If you highlight the ISBN and press the CALL button, you can bring up the Marketplace listing details for the book.  Scrolling down further will bring the sales rank and edition information into view.  When finished, press the BACK or SCAN button to return to the Scan List.

To manually enter an ISBN to the Scan List (for books without barcodes) simply start typing in the digits of the ISBN.  The SCAN button becomes an ADD button.  Press the ADD button when done punching in the ISBN digits.  The phone keypad is automatically shifted into numeric-only mode for ease of ISBN/UPC entry during manual entry.  If an ISBN contains an "X", just leave it off and ScoutPal will compute it for you based on the digits in the ISBN.

After pressing the ADD button, the manually entered ISBN is added to the Scan List.  The phone sets the button back to SCAN, and you are ready to add more ISBNs to the list, manually as you have just done, or with SCAN.

Here we have just scanned in a second book, and it has been added to the Scan List.  You may alternate at will between scanning and manual entry.  When you are done with all entries, and are ready to lookup the results for the merchandise in the Scan List, press the FETCH button.

Here are the results for the first ISBN in the Scan List.

If you have elected to show "All Editions" in your results (ScoutPals can customize content and format of results) you can scroll down to the editions list to get the results for other editions.  Simply highlight the edition, and press the CALL button.  After viewing results for the other edition, press the BACK button to return to where you were in the primary results screen.

Scrolling further down, we come to the results for the second ISBN in the list.  This one looks like a gem!  Definitely a keeper.  But sometimes it is worthwhile to bring up the listing details to make sure that someone hasn't made a mistake listing it in the Amazon Marketplace.  Press the CALL button to see the Marketplace details...

We have brought up the Marketplace details, and sure enough, this looks to be a valuable find.  Notice that the first listing is ex-library, so congratulations if you just scanned in a good retail copy!

Scrolling further down the details, we see that this is definitely a valuable book.

When finished viewing the results, press the SCAN or BACK button to return to the Scan List, and begin scanning or entering more books.

While in an empty Scan List, press FETCH to bring up the Options menu.  If the Scan List has items in it, press "321" and then FETCH to bring up the Options menu.

The Options menu will allow you to easily clear the current Scan List, or to recall the last Scan List retrieved, just in case you can't believe that the last book you scanned was really worth $125! :)
