Control the Way Internet Explorer (IE) Works When Downloading ScoutPalDB Updates

You will want IE to stop after the download completes so you have a chance to figure out where IE put the downloaded file.  If this option is not enabled, IE's download will finish silently, and unless you're already familiar with IE's download behavior, you might not know where it put the file!

Step 1.  To change IE's download behavior, you will need to get to IE's Tools / Internet Options control panel.  (If you don't see a way to click Tools / Internet Options in your IE window, right-click the top of IE until you can find a way to enable its Menu Bar.  Then click Tools / Internet Options from the menu bar.)  Click the Advanced tab, then scroll slowly down the list of option checkboxes until you see the "Notify when downloads complete" option.  Ensure that it is checked, then click the [OK] button.

Step 2.  Now you can go to the DB update page, and begin your download.  After you click a download button, IE will ask you if you want to open or save the file.  You don't want to "open" it, you want to "save" it to a known target location, so click Save.  A a standard Windows Save dialog window opens, with the download file name filled in.  Don't change the name.  But do look carefully at the Save window controls, and you will find various ways to specify exactly where you wish to put the downloaded file.  For example, you can select "Desktop", which is recommended as it is an easily-accessible location.

NOTE:  It's possible that your version of IE has made its own mind up about where it saves downloads, and it seems to be out of control.  You will need to refer to Microsoft online support resources regarding these defects in IE, for example: no download prompt, default save-as location, etc.  Or you can switch to using Firefox, which has a simple way to control downloading.

When you are satisfied that you understand and know exactly where the download is going to go, click the [Save] button, and IE will begin the download process.  You might get a warning that the file already exists.  This is not an error message, you have done nothing wrong, you are just being asked to confirm that you want to replace the old file.  Of course you do, so click Yes.  A download progress window now comes up, giving you a continual estimate as to how long the download will take.  (Download speed depends on the quality of your internet connection and current traffic on the internet.)  DO NOT checkmark the "close this box when the download completes" option, or you will defeat what you did in step 1!

Step 3.  When the download completes, the IE download progress window will have an [Open Folder] button.  You can click this button to open the folder containing the downloaded file, or you can close the progress window, and navigate to the target folder on your own.  For example, if you downloaded to the desktop, it's probably easier to just close the download progress window and simply bring up the desktop on your own.  In any case, you don't want to click the [Open] button, you want to instead click the [Open Folder] button or otherwise navigate to the target folder and work with what you just downloaded from there.
